There was an article posted recently about why John Edwards has not yet made an endorsement for either Clinton or for Obama. After reading the article, I read many of the posts that came after and felt compelled to respond. It seems that most supporters feel the need to vilify the opposing candidate.
I feel that there are many supporters of both Clinton and Obama who have lost sight of the objective. At this point in the election, there are only two options left to the Democrats: Clinton or Obama. Well, maybe that is a little misleading. What about the third option of Democrat? Should it really only be Obama or Bust? Clinton or Bust? Is it impossible to say that you support the Democratic party in general?
All of you Democrats (Clinton Supporters and Obama Supporters) who say you won't support the other candidate if they win the nomination, you are losing sight of what is important. The goal in this election is to put someone in office to reverse what George W. Bush has done. McCain won't do that. Clinton or Obama will. The bottom line you are faced with is that whoever wins the Democratic nomination will face John McCain. McCain has already sworn to continue the awful brand of politics that George W. Bush has implemented. If you happen to be a fan of George W. Bush (which I can't understand if you are a Democrat), then go ahead and vote for McCain. But if you support Obama, you should support Clinton, and vice versa. Their policies are more similiar to each other's than to John McSame As Bush's.
Both Clinton Supporters and Obama Supporters need to change their attitudes. Both sides need to be willing to say they will support the other should they win. Both sides need to be willing to say they would welcome the other's support rather than have the attitude that "We Don't Need Your Support To Win."
This isn't necessarily about who is the most qualified to run this nation. Technically John McCain has more qualifications to be president than Obama, but that doesn't mean that I would want McCain to be my president! What this IS about is changing the way America runs itself and the way we are perceived globally. It is not accomplished purely by HOPE as Obama would have you believe, and it is not accomplished purely by saying, "I've been there before," as Clinton would have you believe.
So please, stop this gratuitous fighting. Put your support behind the Democratic party. Choose either candidate to support (Clinton or Obama). Really it is fine. Just don't vilify the other one. Say, "This is who I support, but should they not win, I will gladly throw my support behind the other." Supporters of BOTH Candidates NEED to be willing to do that.
